The brief

Long-haul driving is lonely work, and the mental health toll on drivers is well documented. Marlon Cuadra of AutoPilot Level7 came to us with a clear idea: give drivers an easy way to talk to other drivers by voice, plus a direct line to support when they need it, without ever asking them to take their attention off the road.

He found us through the Wing giveaway pipeline. The concept stood out because it was simple, social, and aimed squarely at a real problem rather than a clever feature.

What it does

Up2Talk lets drivers connect with peers by voice while they drive. The piece that matters most is the “I’m not OK” button, a one-tap path to a helpline for a driver who’s struggling. Around that sits the social layer: voice calling with other drivers, and a fleet operator view aimed at the trucking companies Marlon wants to sell into.

The decisions that shaped it

A few calls did the heavy lifting.

Voice as the interface, not a screen. Drivers can’t be tapping and reading at the wheel. Building around voice isn’t a style choice, it’s the only safe way the app can work, and it shaped everything downstream.

Compliance built into how it works. We committed to working through NHVR driver-distraction rules as part of the build rather than treating them as a box to tick later. For an app used behind the wheel, that’s the difference between a product fleets can adopt and one they can’t.

Crisis support as a first-class feature. The “I’m not OK” path isn’t buried in a menu. It’s a primary action, because for this audience that’s the feature that justifies the whole thing.

Foundations that don’t box him in. Marlon’s already thinking about adjacent markets like the RV and van life community. We agreed to build the core chat and user model so a new “mode” is a content and design exercise later, not a rebuild, without adding cost or scope to this phase.

On the technical side, voice runs on Twilio, and any picture-in-picture style features were flagged early as needing native iOS and Android builds.

Where it stands

Design is complete and Up2Talk is now in development.
